Combell is hiring!
Would you like to join our internal System Administration team of 12 colleagues? They are responsible for our customised hosting solutions, tailored to our customers’ needs.
As a Windows System Engineer, you will manage and optimise our hosting infrastructure. You will combine in-depth technical troubleshooting with improving and automating existing systems. This means you will not only help resolve issues but also actively contribute to a more stable, secure and performant infrastructure.
Curious to see what this looks like in practice? Check out some of our customer success stories, including Corilus and Horta. Our Managed Services page will also give you a better understanding of the services we provide.
The role
You will be responsible for our Windows hosting infrastructure, from its technical setup and configuration to day-to-day management, maintenance and further optimisation. You will work with technologies such as Windows Server, IIS and SQL Server, tackling complex technical challenges that require thorough analysis and an in-depth understanding of the underlying systems.
For example, you will investigate performance issues, analyse logs, optimise backup and restore procedures, and identify the root causes of issues involving web server configurations or load balancing. As a technical escalation point, you will take ownership of more complex Windows-related issues and work with colleagues and customers to develop lasting solutions.
You will also look beyond day-to-day operations. You will actively contribute ideas for modernising, securing and improving our infrastructure. You will optimise existing scripts, develop automation solutions and improve procedures to make environments easier to manage and prevent recurring issues. You will also play an important role in setting up new customer environments, migrations and lifecycle management.
Operational management remains an important part of your role, but you will also have the opportunity to work on structural improvements, share technical knowledge and continuously optimise the way we work.
What will you do?
Manage and develop our infrastructure: take ownership of setting up, configuring, managing and maintaining Windows hosting environments from A to Z.
Analyse and resolve complex technical issues: handle Windows-related escalations and investigate performance issues, SQL Server problems, IIS configurations, clustering and load balancing.
Drive structural infrastructure improvements: contribute to the modernisation, stability, security and performance of our platforms. Take initiative to prevent recurring issues and optimise existing solutions.
Expand our automation capabilities: optimise PowerShell scripts and develop automation solutions using Ansible, for example, to deploy and configure customer environments.
Optimise backup, restore and disaster recovery: improve backup and database restore procedures and help make recovery processes and disaster recovery solutions reliable and efficient.
Implement and migrate customer environments: set up new servers and environments, coordinate migrations and contribute to lifecycle management, for example when systems need to be replaced.
Ensure operational continuity: monitor our infrastructure, including patching, backups, maintenance and availability. Take action when needed and look for structural solutions.
Manage documentation and knowledge sharing: document technical solutions and procedures, ensuring colleagues can put them into practice.
Collaborate with customers and colleagues: discuss technical issues and proposed solutions with customers and coordinate with colleagues and other teams. You will also handle internal IT escalations.
With which technologies?
You will work with a broad technology stack, with Windows at its core:
Windows Server: Windows Server, Active Directory, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), etc.
Web hosting: IIS and shared web server configurations.
Databases: Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL), including performance, backups, restores and disaster recovery.
Scripting and automation: PowerShell and Ansible.
Infrastructure and virtualisation: VMware, KVM, clustering and failover clusters.
Networking and security: networking, firewalls and security concepts.
Storage and backups: NetApp and Veeam.
Version control: knowledge of Git is a plus when managing and improving scripts and automation.
Our System Administration team works with a wide range of technologies, and we do not expect you to have in-depth knowledge of everything. Linux will also be involved to a limited extent, but prior knowledge is not required.
Who are you?
You have several years of experience as a Windows System Engineer or in a similar system administration role.
You have a solid understanding of Windows Server and can analyse technical issues based on logs, configurations and system behaviour.
You have experience with, or a strong interest in, technologies such as IIS, SQL Server, backups and virtualisation.
You have an analytical mindset and look for the root cause of issues rather than simply addressing the symptoms.
You enjoy taking initiative and actively think about how existing infrastructure, processes and solutions can be improved.
You are interested in scripting and automation. Experience with PowerShell is important; knowledge of Ansible and Git is a plus.
You are eager to learn and open to further developing your knowledge of our technologies and infrastructure.
You communicate clearly and in a customer-oriented manner, both verbally and in writing. You are fluent in Dutch, both spoken and written, and pay attention to accurate documentation.
You work accurately, are results-oriented and take ownership of your work.
You are a true team player who enjoys sharing knowledge and working with colleagues to find solutions.
What do we offer?
The opportunity to further develop your technical expertise and learn from experienced colleagues.
A varied role with complex technical challenges, responsibility and plenty of room for initiative.
The opportunity to actively contribute to the modernisation and improvement of our infrastructure.
The chance to work at an international, growing company alongside a driven team where customer satisfaction is a top priority.
A modern, vibrant office.
A well-established working-from-home policy.
A company car.
The possibility of bicycle leasing.
Events that people will still be talking about for years to come.
Fresh soup, fresh fruit, chilled water, Ghent coffee, delicious tea and more; everything you need to keep your energy levels up!
